birthday!!
the first thing i did on august 11th was watch lady bird at 2am which was maybe ill-advised considering the movie's content and that this is specifically my first birthday out of school, but no regerts, i wept, good movie. definitely more could be said about it but im very sure i'll look very stupid if i try to say anything interesting about a movie so i'll only say i recommend it.
there's a chance younger folk are its target audience, and an equally good chance not, but i couldn't know what its like to be older than i am watching a movie about young people being young. i guess i just perceive that some large component of the chord it struck in me felt particular to my own stage of life. on the other hand, we tend to live in cycles, so i don't know.
i told myself a couple weeks ago i'd finish reviewing my Latin 1 book by today, which i've told several people i did but actually there's one passage left to translate and I probably won't manage it before midnight just because it's pretty long
but here's a photo i took working on latin a few days ago: i was sitting at a park kind of sandwiched between two offroads so my textbook was lit by turning headlights. i had to move to a different patch of grass when i kept staring into them for several minutes at a time and then being annoyed that i was predictably blinded for 10 minutes and couldnt see what i was translating
but look, he's looking straight at me! it would be rude i think to look away
my dad got me a hind wheel bike rack so i have somewhere to hang my saddlebag. i'll have to get out monday or tuesday and finally bring all the stuff i want to the park -- there's a gorgeous wooded hill in my city overlooking our river and i've been wanting to sit along the traintracks long grown over with clover and purslane. (a boy at the farm where i volunteered a couple years ago taught me purslane is edible -- lifechanging!!! if you don't know, purslane is edible and also very delicious.) it'd be a great place to take proper nice pictures, and sketch a bit, and now that i'm done reviewing latin 1, and 2 and 3 won't be delivered for a couple weeks, i can start reviewing greek too
my mom also got me a gift certificate so i'll be able to see a few operas this year, even bring a plus one, which I'm super excited about. my school used to cover the cost of a few operas a year for the students, and i was really regretting that I wouldn't have that option this year
i looked into it briefly and it looks like my local company will be showing Fidelio and Medea among others! very very excited.
tomorrow, off to continue sitting for a portrait for a family friend who asked if she could paint me. she has once before, around 2019, but somehow this time she says she's having so much trouble lol -- she's wiped the canvas and started over something like 5 times. i wonder if it's because i had green hair at the time, and now that it's my own plain old brown (i do love it like this but i fight demons named Inebrya Permanent Red Hair Colour every day), there isn't a token feature to latch on to, and getting an actual likeness of my face is tough. certainly that last bit is true lmao
also tomorrow, i'm going over to a friend(?)'s catholic parish for a showing of, i think, the mario movie, in which i have no interest but it would be nice to see this guy. i think he's the type whom i love best at some distance, if that's ok to say. when we talked super often or worked together i had a pretty hard time with him but i really do have a great affection for him [otherwise?]. besides, they have popcorn for a dollar.
we had soft cheese and prosecco in the evening for a little celebration but im seriously entertaining the possibility now that I had more glasses than i realized so off to bed with me! more of a journal format thing than i've posted before but oh well, that was today's character.
